What is Laparoscopy?

Laparoscopy, also known as diagnostic laparoscopy, is a surgical diagnostic procedure performed in the abdominal cavity in order to examine the organs inside the abdomen with the aid of a camera. It’s a low-risk procedure which allows your doctor to see your body in real time, without open surgery. It is a minimally invasive procedure that is done using a thin, long tubular rod-like instruments, which are introduced via small incisions (usually 0.5–1.5 cm) on the abdomen or pelvis. The instrument used in laparoscopy is called laparoscope which is a long, thin tube with a high-intensity light and a high-resolution camera at the front. The camera is used to view, magnify and record the image on the monitor. The instrument is inserted through a small incision in the abdomen. As it moves along the affected area, the camera sends images to a video monitor. Due to the camera, visualisation of the surgical field is enhanced which results in greater precision and better results

Why Laparoscopy?

Laparoscopy is generally used to identify and diagnose the source of pelvic or abdominal pain. No doubt abdominal problems can also be diagnosed with imaging techniques such as CT scan, ultrasound or MRI scan but when these tests are unable to provide enough information for a diagnosis, then we have to use laparoscopy. Generally, doctors recommend a laparoscopy to examine the following organs in order to detect any mass or a tumour or any disease.

  • appendix

  • gallbladder

  • liver

  • pancreas

  • small intestine and large intestine (colon)

  • spleen

  • stomach

  • pelvic or reproductive organs

Advantages of Laparoscopy

  • minimized post-surgical scarring

  • patient healing and recovery times are reduced

  • less post-operative pain

  • Haemorrhaging is reduced

  • require a negligible hospital stay

  • Reduced exposure of internal organs
